Director of Consumer Marketing and Audience Development

The Clarion Media Group—which includes The Daily Dot, the leading internet culture publication, the acclaimed science magazine Nautilus, and the Phire influencer network—is seeking someone to take the lead in developing strategies for audience acquisition, engagement, and retention and executing those strategies. This position collaborates with the editorial, agency, and tech teams and reports to the CEO.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develops, documents, reports on, and maintains user journeys including strategies and tactics to attract new audience, engage, capture, and convert them, and turn them into evangelists
  • Manages and maintains audience data collection and interprets analytics
  • Develops personas and segments audience profiles
  • Conducts user research to inform strategies driving user goals
  • Creates, manages, and optimizes campaigns to recruit & capture new audience via owned platforms (including web, email, push, chat/sms, etc.) and unowned channels (including both established and new social media platforms and search), using both paid and organic strategies 
  • Collaborates with editorial & agency teams by providing regular audience insights and co-developing strategies/policies to increase engagement, retention, and LTV
  • Creates & manages loyalty/promotion programs to turn readers into evangelists
  • Oversees community management to increase engagement, retention, and promotion
  • Consults with tech team to develop features to facilitate the user journey
  • Builds and manages marketing team to accomplish all of the above

What We’re Looking For

  • You have at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • You have a proven track record developing, maintaining, and analyzing audience engagement initiatives across several key platforms/mediums
  • You have expertise in audience segmentation and developing comprehensive strategies to saturate segments
  • You have a working knowledge of the complete digital marketer’s toolbox
  • You know how to attract and retain readers across multiple demographics
  • You understand digital media trends
  • You’re a marketing analytics master
  • You have experience in several aspects of Audience Engagement, including:
    • Organic social media promotion and measurement
    • Opt-in forms, email distribution, and push notifications
    • Online community management and measurement
    • Data analysis and experimentation
    • A/B testing
  • You are well-versed in established social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Flipboard, Reddit) and keep up-to-date on emerging ones (e.g., TikTok)
  • You are skilled in leading team members and delegating work
  • You’re comfortable and confident working as a part of a virtual team
  • You’re skilled in multitasking and prioritizing in a rapidly changing environment
  • You have experience in partnership development and content syndication (a plus!)
